Welcome to Upside Down Wellness!

My name is Jeanie and I'm the founder and director of Upside Down Wellness. I am a Certified Transformational Nutrition Coach and mother of four typical boys (grown men now) and a teenage daughter with Down syndrome.

Upside Down Wellness came from first: my desire to learn alongside my readers more about wellness, nutrition, and self-care. I am a serial researcher and for most of my life, I have always been interested in food and what it does for us and to us. I LOVE FOOD!!! I HATE being sick. β€œLet food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” - Hippocrates

Second, the word Down has to do with my teenage daughter Phoebe, who has Down syndrome. When she was born, I became even more of a radical about health and wellness, especially when I was told about all the health challenges someone with Down syndrome is more susceptible to. I began nutritional intervention before she was two weeks old and our wellness protocol for her and our family has evolved over the past 17 years. She does not get sick - no colds, flu, anything. We want to share what we've learned.

Third, the word Upside is the term I wanted to use as a positive way to express how we can turn anything around with the right information and tools to get it back on the 'upside,' including our health.

Upside Down describes how I feel my life has been - truly upside down. I've not only been learning how to support my daughter's nutritional needs, but realizing the importance of taking care of me - the Caretaker. I forgot how to do that for so many years. I gained weight, got sick a lot, and started to age rapidly. I ended up with Type 2 Diabetes, diverticulitis, hypothyroidism, depression, and hormonal problems. My mother died from complications from Diabetes and my father died at an early age (54) from pancreatic cancer. I knew my chances of being around for my daughter long-term were getting slimmer every day. I had to do more than just take care of her. I had to take care of me.

So, this website is about more than health or nutrition. It's about self-care, self-love, and a journey of authenticity. It's about our continuing journey for her health and mine. And maybe...yours!

We hope you will find something here that will transform your life!
